Beta Feature: Recent Blog Posts

10-23-2011

One feature that has been requested several times over the last year is the ability to show "Recent Blog Posts" on the home page. I never got around to incorporating this into Pulse Pro, but at one point I posted some guidelines in the forum on how one could theoretically modify the blog.php file to make it do this.

A user (Ricard L.) recently tried it out and successfully got it working.  I made a few minor tweaks and now am posting it as a new feature in Beta. Once its been tested by a few users and no bugs are found, I will probably incorporate it into the main version.

To see how it looks in action, take a look at the Pulse home page.  It's pretty simple and just show the 3 most recent post titles and dates. You can tweak it and apply your own styles as needed.

To set it up on your Pulse Pro site, just copy the file recent.php into your "includes" folder. Then just use the same embed code you would use for the blog, but replace blog.php with recent.php and paste it into your home page html.

Hey Mark,

I tried this about a year ago and got it to work, I just made another version of blog.php and 'undressed' it, so only the titles and dates show up on my homepage.

Not too hard if you are a cut and paste master :-)

Bye,
Roger

Yes, nice one son.

I am also interested to know if you can implement Tags or Blog Categories for the Pulse Blog? The other great option would be to have/allow posts by e-mail.

Too much to ask?

Andy -

There are no plans for those features at this time, sorry.

Oh. Are they very difficult to implement? I would not really know...

It could be tricky since pulse has no database, but that's not the reason. It's just not something I want in the minimalistic pulse blog and I also don't really think they add much to the experience.

I was over in the forum and posted something about categories and just noticed your response here on 1/5, Mark. I disagree that categories would not add much to the experience. I currently have a client that needs a very simple way to add articles that she writes to her site (something like Wordpress would be too complicated for her) - but writes them under a set of categories. Pulse would have been perfect for her but I can't use it now that she can't create categories.

Also the fact that it doesn't have any sort of search is a problem.

I think there's definitely a line you should draw if you're trying to keep it minimal but adding in those two items could be a benefit and get you more pro downloads.

I love this feature, but how can you show a little snippet of the content as well, maybe a sentence or two and the READ MORE?
